These December days call for mulled wine.  We have experimented with various recipes, including Glögg (en av oss är svensk), but we prefer the Glühwein recipe.

 

For a decent sized jug:


1 orange studded with 5 cloves

The juice of another orange

The peel of a lemon
A tablespoon of caster sugar
A teaspoon of finely chopped fresh ginger (or some ginger wine instead)

6 cardamom pods, bashed around a bit

2 fresh Ceylon cinnamon sticks, broken into shards (this releases all the flavour)

A good pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (our grater works with nutmeg too)

2 bottles of red plonk

A slosh of Grand Marnier

 

Heat everything gently and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Sieve if you wish to make it look better; otherwise don’t.  Serve quite hot, in tumblers.  Make a friend.

 

Finally, it is interesting that the German word glüwein comes from glühen and wein.  Glühen means glow.  It is the drinker who glows, not the wine.  Make a good friend.
